Effective Probing Guidelines + Video

In a nutshell: Take a look at the first installment of Yup’s new training video series, along with companion slides, which address effective probing.

One of the trickiest parts about tutoring online is being matched with a student you know nothing about. Do they need an exhaustive explanation or just a push in the right direction? This is why so much emphasis is placed on clarifying student progress and existing knowledge before choosing a suitable explanation approach.

We are excited to share a couple new resources with you which have been created to provide structure and guidance for the Gap Clarification Phase:

Did you find the video format helpful?
What are some training videos you hope to see in future?

Student Feedback + Discussion Problem + Positive Language Reminder

In a nutshell:
– Read a student’s thoughts on about their Yup experience
– Ensure you are familiar with the concept below
Reminder: Positive Language

STUDENT FEEDBACK:

We recently received the following comments from one of our users:

“Please tell the tutors to keep asking GUIDING questions- they are a tremendous help in helping us students gain lasting comprehension of the material. And overall, keep up the great work! ? I LOVE this app – it has made the difference between staying in school and considering dropping out!”

Feedback like this serves as a reminder that all your hard work is undeniably impacting our student’s lives! We want to thank all of you for helping to make our team of tutors truly exceptional.

DISCUSSION PROBLEM:

Please take a moment to review the following problem to ensure you have a solid understanding of how to solve questions like this (click to enlarge in new tab):
Share your thoughts on how you would approach teaching this below!

POSITIVE LANGUAGE REMINDER:

Please take care to ensure that all interactions with students are welcoming, patient and free from judgment. Condescending phrases like “It’s quite simple…” or “Obviously…”  are never okay and will only frustrate students further. Be careful about how you are typing messages– using all caps, “…” or “??” can send the wrong message.

Happy tutoring!

Introducing: Session Analysis

Each week, we share a ‘Session of the Week’ to demonstrate exemplary teaching and procedural practices. While this can be an effective way to foster good tutoring habits, it can be just as helpful to look at imagesless-than-ideal interactions and discuss ways they can be improved or avoided.

This week we are introducing a ‘Session Analysis’ to create awareness and spark discussion about sessions showing room for improvement:

(Opens session PDF in new tab.)

yup_discussAfter reading through this session, what are some things you would do differently if paired with the same student? What are some approaches you could take to ensure the student’s gap is bridged? Do you ever find yourself making similar mistakes?

Still Confused about Session Tags?

In a nutshell: See the document linked below for the Dos and Donts of using session tags
.

To help ensure we are all on the same page with using session tags, we have added an in-depth look at their uses to our Session Categorization guide:

Session Tags In-Depth

These guidelines address many of the questions we’ve been receiving from you and provide more clarity about tagging less common situations.

Still unsure about how to tag a particular situation or have a question? Don’t hesitate to get in touch with us at tutor.support@yup.com.
