NEW FEATURE: Teaching Tips!

In a Nutshell: Use our new Teaching Tips to help adapt to students needs!

We know how difficult it is to adapt every session to meet the needs of a student.download-1

We also know that it is much easier to do this if you have information about the student prior to starting the session.

That is why we have updated the Review State to include Teaching Tips! Expect to see this new update on Thursday, November 3.

TEACHING TIPS:

Teaching Tips can be seen in the Review State and on the Status Bar above the normal session view. The Teaching Tip shown will depend on the student’s Yup activity and behavior.

TEACHING TIP What You Should Do
“New Student: make a great impression, encourage to engage” Make sure you give a great first impression so they keep coming back! If the student is unsure about how to use our app, please explain how Yup works.
“Give a cheerful welcome back” This student should already know the drill, get to their problem as quickly as possible.
“Let down in last session, make this one great” Unfortunately this student had a negative experience last time they connected with a Yup tutor. You should be especially friendly and attentive while adapting quickly to their needs.
“Gone a while: welcome back, make this one great” This student has not used Yup in a while so welcome them back. They should already know the drill though, so get to their problem as quickly as possible. Try to make this session a great one, so they come back more often.
“Needs encouragement to engage” This student has had issues engaging with tutors and following Yup’s honor code. Be patient and supportive, all while reaffirming our values.

Additionally, we have updated the status bar and removed unnecessary information. As of now you will only be seeing:

  • Student Name
  • Subject
  • Teaching Tip
  • Session Time

Please reach out if you have any questions, concerns or feedback!

Best,
Team Ops

NEW: Tutor PIP Program

In a nutshell: Check out the Tutor Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) Overview to learn more about our new training program

We are excited to announce a new approach for helping low-ranking tutors improve: the Tutor Performance Improvement Plan or PIP program!

This system invites tutors who are ranked in the bottom 15% for a given week to work helpone-on-one with our Tutor Training Coordinator, Sharon Matsuoka to ensure any performance issues are addressed and corrected.

We encourage you to read through the PIP Overview for more information about how this new program works and what to expect if you are flagged for an unacceptable report card.

Let us know what questions you have and have a great weekend!

New Feature: Canned Responses!

In a nutshell: Starting this Wednesday, Oct. 26, your Tutor Dashboard will let you send all kinds of common messages in a snap.

Why we built Canned Responses

Some phrases and types of messages need to be used much more often than others in sessions. To give you more time to focus on your explanations and to keep students more engaged, we decided to speed up that process! This versatile feature also lets you edit the messages before sending them AND cycle through different versions to avoid repetition.

What to do now

  1. Watch this video to see how to use the Canned Responses
  2. Take the Google Forms quiz below
  3. Use the canned responses when they arrive! As an incentive, we will do a random draw on October 31st of the tutors who have used this feature, and the winner will get a $25 bonus in his or her October paycheck.

As always, email tutor.support@yup.com if you have any questions.

Regards,

Team Yup

Tutoring Guidelines Update + Survey

In a nutshell:
  –   The way we’re grading rubric area C3: Engage Student has changed
  –   Please take the survey below about who you communicate with most

Guideline Change:
When a student is struggling, it can be tempting to ease their anxiety by fixing a mistake or finishing a tricky step. When this happens, the student is taking a backseat in the session and misses out on a valuable learning opportunity.

Instead, we need to see encouraging “we” language to reassure the student and methodical, guiding questions or examples adapted to their knowledge gap.

By holding tutors accountable for doing the work of the student, we aim to challenge both students and tutors. Please see Tutoring Template 2.2 to ensure you fully understand these adjustments (shown in red below):
