Team Discussion: Building Background Knowledge

This team discussion topic comes from, Andrew Bregman,  one of our Tutor Quality Managers:

“As a fifth year electrical engineering student, I am very familiar with how difficult it can sometimes be to explain a topic in such a way that no missing gaps are present. All too often in my classes a professor will be explaining some broad concept and then completely graze by a sub topic that perhaps is obvious to HIM, but the rest of the class is oblivious to! This is really a challenge when teaching.

So how do YOU ensure that when you are tutoring a student you don’t just completely jump over a topic that they do not understand at all?

In what ways can you ensure that a student doesn’t arrive at a solution without understanding all of the underlying ideas behind it?”
